In July 2019 Sefton Council declared a Climate Emergency. It was agreed that we are committed to reducing direct and indirect carbon emissions to Net Zero by 2030.
Sefton Council also recognises our role in encouraging, supporting and enabling Sefton residents, businesses and visitors to reduce their carbon emissions.
Transport-related activities make up almost a third (around 29%) of Carbon Dioxide emissions in the Liverpool City Region.
Sefton Council has developed a Low Carbon Transport Strategy Position Statement to demonstrate that we are continuing to work to address the climate emergency and to explain why we are taking certain actions and how they contribute to a cleaner, greener and healthier Sefton.
What are we doing?
A wide range of actions is needed to reduce and remove transport-related Carbon emissions.
These actions can not be delivered overnight, and some need a lot of investment of time, energy and funding, while others require changes to how our towns and cities look and how people travel.
The areas we are looking at are:
- Staff Travel
- Council Work Vehicles
- Construction
- Maintenance, landscaping, and drainage
- Active Travel
- Electric Vehicles
- Reducing travel demand
What we have done so far
Sefton Council has started work in all the areas, but have identified some as early priorities:
- Electric Vehicles
- Active Travel
- Maintenance, landscaping and drainage. This includes street lighting, street maintenance plans and an Urban Greenways Strategy
- Construction
