What Does School Readiness Mean?

In Sefton, school readiness has been defined by a multi-agency working group as a shared responsibility across children, families, schools, and early years settings.

School readiness means:

  • Children who are confident, resilient, and eager to learn
  • Schools that are ready to welcome and support all children
  • Settings that provide strong early learning foundations
  • Families that are equipped to support learning and development at home

What Makes a Child ‘Ready to Learn’?

At its heart, school readiness is about ensuring children:

  • Are confident and resilient
  • Are socially and emotionally prepared
  • Show curiosity and keenness to learn
  • Have personal, social and early learning skills

School readiness is not just about the child – it’s about the whole system working together to ensure children have the best start in life. As part of a multi-disciplinary and multi-agency response, School Readiness covers integrated provision from pre-birth to five.

The Three Strands of School Readiness in Sefton

Sefton’s approach focuses on three interconnected and equally important strands:

  1. Child Ready

Children develop the key skills and confidence to begin their learning journey.

  1. Family Ready

Families are supported to nurture learning at home and prepare their child for school.

  1. School Ready

Schools and settings are equipped and welcoming, creating a smooth and positive transition.

Together, these strands work to meet the needs of both child and family, making sure everyone is ready for this important step.
