Our School Streets

Current School Streets

In Sefton there are currently 3 school streets in place:

  • Greenbank High School – Hastings Road – July 2023 (permanent)
  • Birkdale High School – Windy Harbour Road – July 2023 (permanent)
  • Summerhill Primary School – Grange Road – since June 2024 (Currently temporary and to be made permanent in 2025)

Identifying appropriate school streets is a key element of the Sefton School Streets programme, and where a School Street isn’t feasible, other initiatives are implemented, such as a School Neighbourhood approach.

Sefton Council has engaged with schools across the borough for the Sefton School Streets scheme, with plans to engage with more.

Ongoing School Streets Programme

Sefton Council has worked with Sustrans and All Saints Catholic Primary School, one of the schools in the North Park School Neighbourhood in Bootle with a year-6 pupil-led task force to identify ways to reduce congestion and pollution outside their school.

As part of this work, a Park and Stride has been implemented at Bootle Leisure Centre, which lets parents and carers use the nearby car park for free at school drop-off and pick-up times. This reduces congestion around the school, and makes the journey safer, healthier and more enjoyable.

To date we have worked with:

  • Stanley High School
  • Birkdale High School
  • Greenbank High School
  • Summer Primary School
  • All Saints Catholic Primary School
  • English Martyrs Catholic Primary School
  • Bedford Primary School

Success Stories in Southport

The first School Streets implemented in Sefton were at Birkdale and Greenbank High Schools, both of which have been operational since July 2023.
