What is the Graduated Approach?

The SEND Code of Practice, 2014 provides guidance on a ‘Graduated Approach’ to identify and support pupils with a range of differences across the developmental spectrum. Sefton SEN and Inclusion Service supports schools in fulfilling their statutory duties at each level of the Graduated Response.

EHCP - Applied for when SEN support is not enough to ensure that the child is making progress. SEN Support - The child will have access to additional support in school through wave 2 and 3 interventions. These are reviewed at least termly in collaboration with the SENCo, parent/carers and child. Quality First Teaching - The child’s needs are met through high quality teaching (even with a diagnosis), and they are making progress. There are no additional interventions or support put in place.

Wave 1-Strategies and supportive measures are implemented to ensure all children can access their learning regardless of need, diagnosed or undiagnosed. Wave 2 – targeted interventions, might be as a group. Short term interventions offered to many children who have specific areas limiting their ability to progress. Wave 1 – Strategies and supportive measures are implemented to ensure all children can access their learning regardless of need, diagnosed or undiagnosed.
