Interview: Audrey Forkings

Audrey Forkings started at Sefton Council when it was just five years old. She spoke about her career and a motto we can all live by.

Thank you for your many years of service, Audrey. How long has it been, exactly?

I’ve worked at Sefton Council for 46 years now. It’s been a journey filled with learning, growth, and meaningful connections.

(Now), I’m a Review and Reassessment Officer. I work within the Review and Transformation team, where we focus on ensuring services are appropriately tailored and reassessed to meet the needs of our community.

Sefton Council was established in 1974, and you came along not long after that. What were things like at the start?

One of my earliest memories is walking into the office on my first day, feeling both nervous and excited. I remember being warmly welcomed by colleagues who were generous with their time and support.

That sense of camaraderie and teamwork has stayed with me ever since.

The team spirit has stayed the same, but with Sefton Council recently celebrating its 50th birthday, how much has changed?

There have been many positive changes, but I’d say the biggest has been the shift towards more collaborative and person-centred approaches.

The Council has embraced innovation and inclusivity, and it’s been inspiring to see how services have evolved to better support our residents.

Have the people around you helped you get to where you are now?

Yes, I’ve been fortunate to work within a team that has some truly dedicated and compassionate individuals. My managers, John Hamilton, and Faith Chiwanza have been a consistent source of support and guidance, and I’ve also appreciated the leadership of senior managers. Their encouragement and belief in the team have made a real difference.

Now you’ve been recognised as one of the Council’s longest-serving staff members!

It’s a lovely feeling. Being recognised for long service is not just about the years—it’s about the experiences, the people, and the impact we’ve made together. I’m proud to be part of Sefton Council and grateful for the opportunity to contribute to our community. Thank you for the recognition—it truly means a lot.

"Success isn’t just about what you accomplish in your life—it’s about what you inspire others to do along the way."

I’m honoured to have been part of a team that uplifts and supports one another.
