Veterans in Sefton urged to check if they are eligible for LGBT ban support before December deadline

03 November 2026 2 min read

People in Sefton who were affected by the historic ban on LGBT personnel serving in the Armed Forces are being encouraged to come forward and check whether they are eligible for financial and non-financial support.

Recognition schemes

Anyone whose military service was affected by the ban between 1967 and 2000 may be entitled to apply for recognition schemes introduced by the Government. However, they need to apply by the Saturday 12th December 2026 deadline.

Veterans covered by the scheme include those who were dismissed or discharged, as well as those who experienced harassment, investigations, disciplinary action or other forms of mistreatment because of their actual or perceived sexual orientation or gender identity.

Eligible applicants could receive financial recognition payments, while a range of non-financial restorative measures are also available.

Don't mis December deadline

Cllr Liz Dowd, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Communities and Partnership Engagement, said: "Many people affected by the Armed Forces LGBT ban may not realise that support and recognition are now available to them.

"Some veterans have lived with the impact of these experiences for decades. We don't want anyone in Sefton who may be eligible to miss the opportunity to come forward before the 12th December deadline.

"We're asking residents to share this information with family members, friends and former colleagues who may have served during this period.

"We're also encouraging employers, veterans' groups, charities, community organisations and public sector partners across Sefton to help spread the word. The more people who hear about these schemes, the more chance there is that those affected can access the support available to them."

People who were dismissed or discharged because of the ban may be eligible for a payment of £50,000. Others whose service was negatively affected may be able to apply for an impact payment of up to £20,000, depending on their circumstances.

Long-standing commitment to Armed Forces community

Sefton Council leader Cllr Marion Atkinson said: "Sefton Council has a long-standing commitment to supporting the Armed Forces community through its Armed Forces Covenant and work with local veterans' organisations. And of course, will be hosting the UK Armed Forces Day in Southport next year.

“Our support for this appeal is another part of that commitment, ensuring local veterans and former service personnel are aware of support, recognition and compensation they may be entitled to and do not miss out before the December deadline."

Sefton celebrates national recognition as Southport chosen to host Armed Forces Day 2027.
