Sefton Council Unites Communities Through New “Cleaner. Greener. Together.” Environmental Campaign

Sefton Council has unveiled its new “Cleaner. Greener. Together.” campaign.

Borough-wide initiative

Cleaner. Greener. Together. is an ambitious, borough-wide initiative that brings the Council, communities and partners together to make Sefton a more attractive place for everyone.

Tying all work together

Fly-tipping

This campaign ties together all work taking place across Sefton to tackle fly-tipping, boost responsible waste disposal and improve the environment in every neighbourhood. It is more community focused, emphasising shared responsibility and celebrating the positive changes already taking place.

Over the past year, Sefton Council’s Waste Management, Street Cleansing and Environmental Enforcement teams have made significant progress in reducing waste crime.

Rear entry clearances

Rear entry clearances have increased dramatically, with teams now removing 10–15 tonnes of waste every week. Since July 2025, more than 400 tonnes of rubbish have been cleared from council-owned alleyways. This effort has helped restore local pride, improve safety and has transformed whole streets and neighbourhoods.

Legal deterrents and CCTV trial

Sefton Council has also strengthened its legal deterrents. In November, the Council increased fly-tipping fines to a maximum of £1,000, alongside higher penalties for littering and dog fouling. its Environmental Enforcement team has doubled in size and now benefits from the expertise of a former police detective, boosting its investigative capabilities. A recent CCTV trial has already delivered strong evidence to support enforcement action.

Education and behaviour change

Education and behaviour change remain key pillars of Sefton’s approach. The Council’s Why Fly Tip (#WFT) campaign has used doorstep engagement, targeted materials and social media messaging to raise awareness of the true consequences of fly-tipping. And feedback from residents has played a vital role in shaping and improving future engagement.

Partnership working

Strong partnerships have also been central to the borough’s success. Joint projects with One Vision Housing and other housing associations within the Poets Partnership have seen large-scale clean-ups, community skips, action days and improved education around correct waste disposal. These collaborative efforts have transformed areas in Bootle and beyond.

Sacks to bins

A major operational success is the growing “sacks to bins” initiative, introduced in Derby and Litherland Wards. The Council has switched thousands of households from sacks to wheelie bins, deterring vermin and gulls and resulting in cleaner streets and higher recycling rates. The scheme is continuing to expand across the borough, with phase three launching in March.

Community groups

Community groups remain at the heart of the borough’s progress. The Crosby Wombles and other volunteer teams continue to work alongside Council staff, making daily contributions to cleaner, greener neighbourhoods. Their commitment is recognised and championed through the new campaign identity, in addition to national recognition by Keep Britain Tidy.

Community payback

Sefton Council’s partnership with Community Payback is also delivering real impact. Early projects in privately owned alleys in Litherland, removed more than five tonnes of waste in a single operation, with further improvements now rolling out in other sites.

“Cleaner. Greener. Together."

Together, these efforts form the foundation of the new “Cleaner. Greener. Together.” Campaign, bringing every strand of the Council’s environmental work under one clear, cohesive identity that encourages and empowers everyone to play their part.

Cllr Harvey, Cabinet Member for Cleansing & Street Scene, summed it up simply:
“A cleaner Sefton starts with all of us. Everyone has a role to play in ensuring a better place for us and our families – now and in the future.”
