November’s full Sefton Council meeting saw attendees wear white ribbons to demonstrate their commitment to ending violence against women and girls.

At the meeting, the Council agreed once again to support the national White Ribbon Day and the 16 Days of Activism campaign.

White Ribbon Day takes place on Tuesday 25th November and aims to raise awareness and engage with men and boys to prevent violence against women and girls face.

It marks the start of 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence. It ends on Human Rights Day on Wednesday10th December.

Throughout the 16 days, Sefton Council and partners are holding lunch and learn sessions for professionals. Subjects will range from tackling online misogyny and its links to gender-based violence to understanding support available for survivors of domestic abuse.

This year’s theme #WeSpeakUp is a call to everyone to challenge everyday sexism and misogyny.

Cllr Liz Dowd, Cabinet Member for Communities and Partnerships said: “White Ribbon Day and the 16 Days of Activism are vital reminders that we all have a role to play in challenging harmful behaviours and supporting those affected by abuse.

“Allowing catcalling, sexist jokes and inappropriate comments to slide may be seen as harmless, but this ‘banter’ creates a culture where abuse is accepted, is normalised and can escalate.

“It’s the responsibility of all of us to speak up and speak out when we hear this kind of talk. Calling it out will helps prevent harm and build a safer, more respectful society for everyone.

“And wearing a white ribbon in a simple but powerful act of solidarity. Together we can create a safer Sefton where everyone lives free from fear and violence”
