At their meeting today, Sefton Council’s Cabinet members backed a plan to endorse the Liverpool City Region (LCR) Zero Waste Strategy.

Collective commitment

The Strategy contains a collective commitment to eliminate avoidable waste across the region by 2040.

Key targets in the Strategy include:

• Reducing the total amount of waste handled across the region by a third by 2040.
• By 2040, reduce residual waste (grey bin/sack) by 50% of the levels recorded in 2019.
• Recycling 65% of municipal waste by 2035.

Positive step forward

Cllr Peter Harvey, Sefton Council’s Cabinet Member for Cleansing and Street Scene said: “This is a positive step forward in our commitment to tackling the climate emergency and transforming how we manage waste across Sefton and the wider City Region.

“By reducing the overall amount of waste, increasing recycling and adopting a new process for food waste we are aiming to create a cleaner, greener future for generations to come

“This will benefit everyone, helping to protect the environment, support our communities, and contribute to a more sustainable local economy.”

Partnership to address key challenges

The LCR Strategic Waste & Resources Partnership brings together all LCR local authorities and the Merseyside Recycling & Waste Authority (MRWA) to address key waste management challenges across the region.

Cleaner, Greener Borough

Sefton Council’s endorsement of the Strategy supports the commitment in its current Transformation Plan to update waste collection processes and focus on a Cleaner, Greener Borough.

Reducing and containing waste

As part of the Council’s commitment to reducing and containing waste for environmental improvements, residents who currently have waste collected in sacks will be transitioned to wheelie bin collections which is the Borough’s standard waste collection model. This will take place on a rolling programme commencing Summer 2026.

Sefton Council, along with four of the other district councils in the Liverpool City Region will be delivering the roll out of new food waste collections in Spring 2026.
