New Local Plan to shape future of Sefton

Sefton Council is required to commence the process for preparation of a new Local Plan, setting out a long-term vision for how the borough will grow and develop.
Cabinet approved the publication of a formal notice to commence work on the new Local Plan at its June meeting, marking the official start of the process.
The Local Plan is the key development framework for Sefton setting out where new homes, businesses, open spaces and infrastructure should be located, helping to ensure growth is sustainable and meets the needs of residents and communities.
Funding of over £100,000 has already been provided by the Government to support the early stages of the work.
A key part of developing the new Local Plan will be engagement with residents, businesses and local organisations. The Council will begin this engagement over the summer, asking people for their views on what priorities the new Local Plan should focus on.
To make sure everyone has the opportunity to get involved, every home and business in Sefton will receive a leaflet explaining the process and how to have their say.
The Local Plan will be developed over several stages, with the first full draft expected to be published in summer 2027, followed by a further round of public consultation.
Councillor Phil Hart, Cabinet Member for Highways and Housing, said: “This is an important milestone for Sefton and a real opportunity to shape the future of our borough. We are required to update Sefton’s Local Plan, and this notice is the start of that process.
“The Local Plan plays a vital role in setting out where development should take place and how we balance the need for new homes, jobs and infrastructure while protecting our environment and the character of our communities.
“It’s essential that local people are at the heart of this process and we are committed to giving residents, businesses and partners the opportunity to help shape these plans from the very beginning.”
The Council will continue to provide updates as work progresses and will promote opportunities for residents to get involved at every stage.
