More early years settings, childminders and schools in Sefton are helping children look after their teeth, as part of the All Together Smiling programme.
Reduce decay
Across Cheshire and Merseyside, more than half of eligible settings are now taking part. This is an important step, as programmes of this size can start to reduce tooth decay in children. Sefton settings are playing a key role in this progress.
In total, more than 300 locations across the region now carry out daily supervised toothbrushing. Thi9s means over 15,200 children are learning how to brush their teeth properly from a young age.
Oral health packs
Children and families in Sefton have also benefited from thousands of oral health packs being shared. Each pack includes a toothbrush, fluoride toothpaste and easy‑to‑read advice for home. These packs help make sure children have what they need to care for their teeth every day.
Tooth decay is still a serious issue for children locally. About 3 in every 10 five‑year‑olds in Cheshire and Merseyside have tooth decay, which is higher than the England average.
Children living in more deprived areas, including parts of Sefton, are much more likely to need teeth removed in hospital because of decay. Tooth decay is also the main reason children aged 5 to 9 are admitted to hospital.
Sleep, eating, speech and confidence
Poor dental health can affect a child’s sleep, eating, speech and confidence, as well as causing pain and missed school days.
Settings taking part in Sefton say the programme is making a real difference.
One Sefton nursery said:
“We’re in a deprived area so this programme will support our children immensely.”
Spit not rinse
Staff across the region have said the training helped them understand the right amount of toothpaste to use, why children should spit and not rinse, and how to store toothbrushes safely.
SEND settings have said the tools and guidance are especially helpful for children who find brushing difficult.
All Together Smiling
The All Together Smiling programme will keep encouraging more eligible settings in Sefton to join. The aim is to reduce health inequalities and give every child the chance to grow up with a healthy smile.
