Inspiring neighbourhood pride

A community-led litter picking group is inspiring neighbourhood pride across Sefton.

The group, which takes its name from the beloved 1970s children's TV show, is helping a new generation embrace positive action, community spirit and environmental responsibility.

Bringing local people together 

Founded in 2022, the Crosby Wombles began with a simple mission: to bring local people together and encourage everyone to show pride in where they live.

Since then, the group has grown into a shining example of community-led action, supported by Sefton Council.

Sense of pride

Stephen Kershaw and his daughter Maisie, 14, have been involved from Day 1. Maisie said:
“It does bother me how much litter is around. But cleaning up gives you a sense of pride, and it’s great when people beep or leave nice comments online to show support.”

Led by Dawn and Jacqui

The group was founded and is still led by Dawn D’Auvin and Jacqui Armistead, who have brought community inclusion and fun central to every litter pick.

Dawn, a primary school teacher, helps run family-friendly Wombles activities like ‘Paws for Reading’ and ‘Paws for a Cuppa and Cake,’ making it easy for parents and children to get involved.

Dawn said:
“The Wombles' message about caring for your surroundings still resonates. But what really matters is seeing the friendships formed and the confidence people gain from feeling part of something positive.

Making a difference

“We love litter picking, not just for the sake of tidying up, but because you see the difference straight away. It protects local wildlife, keeps our beautiful surroundings clean and safe, and stops rubbish from ever reaching our beaches, which are such a special part of Crosby.”

Community of over 600 members

Jacqui added: “When we first started, we just put a call out on Facebook and people came together, even though most of us didn’t know each other. It’s grown into a real community now we’ve got over 600 members on our Facebook Page, regular group litter picks, and special family-friendly events so even little ones can get involved.

“What we both love most is that sense of belonging and shared purpose. Our environment is precious, and instead of blaming others, we believe that getting out and doing something positive really makes all the difference. It keeps us active, brings people together and makes Crosby an even better place to live.”

The group shows how a simple litter pick can help tackle environmental issues, reduce isolation and build lasting friendships, all while keeping Sefton clean and welcoming for everyone.

Welcome new members of all ages

Crosby Wombles welcome new members of all ages and abilities. And, their ‘Lend a Paw’ initiative sees their volunteers link up with groups in Bootle and elsewhere to help others with their community projects.

Support from the community

Local coffee shops have joined in too. Joanne Fairfield, manager at Satterthwaites Bakehouse, said: “We love supporting the Wombles. My grandson Noah is only three, but he’s already proud to help and points out litter even when we’re not out ‘wombling.’

Teaching good habits

“It’s teaching good habits that last a lifetime.”

Sefton Council is proud to support initiatives like the Crosby Wombles as part of its wider efforts to make every neighbourhood cleaner and greener.
