Chapel Street Station Approach Improvements Works: What You Need To Know

14 April 2026 5min read

Residents and visitors to Southport will see improvement works taking place over the coming months at Station Approach, the enclosed walkway which links Southport Station to Chapel Street.

To enable these refurbishment works to take place safely and effectively, a temporary construction compound will be located on Chapel Street.

This location has been agreed due to very limited available space within the operational areas of the station and surrounding rail infrastructure.

All efforts will be made to minimise disruption to shoppers and businesses on the busy high street.

The first phase of improvements begins today (Monday April 9th), with completion expected prior to the start of the 2026 Open Golf Championship.

A spokesperson for Sefton Council said: “During the construction period we do expect some minor disruption on Chapel Street due to the erection of a temporarily compound.
“We are working closely with the team behind the refurbishment to ensure any disruption is kept to a minimum and works take place on schedule.”

To keep people moving through the area:

• Pedestrian access through Station Approach will remain open at all times
• All surrounding shops and businesses will remain accessible
• Works will be phased to minimise inconvenience
