Celebrating a Lifesaving Milestone: Mark Askie Reaches 75 Blood Donations

SeftonArc is proud to recognise Mark Askie, a Senior Approved Electrician, for reaching an incredible milestone in his commitment to helping others.
In June, Mark made his 75th donation at the Liverpool Blood Centre. He donated platelets, which are a vital component used in lifesaving treatments across the NHS.
In recognition of this remarkable achievement, Mark will receive an Emerald Donor Card, badge and certificate, marking his outstanding dedication to blood donation.
Mark’s motivation behind platelet donation began following a personal experience.
During his mum’s illness, she relied on platelet infusions as part of her treatment.
Inspired by her, Mark made the decision to move from whole blood donation to platelet donation, with 59 of his 75 donations now being platelets.
Mark said:
“Seeing first-hand how important platelet transfusions were for my mum really stayed with me.
“If taking a bit of time out to donate can help someone else through a difficult time, then it’s absolutely worth it. I’d encourage anyone who can to consider donating, it really does make a difference.”
Platelets are tiny, gold-coloured cells in the blood that help it clot and prevent bleeding. They play a crucial role in medicine, supporting patients in a wide range of situations:
- 69% of platelet donations support people undergoing cancer treatment
- 17% help patients recovering from surgery
- 8% assist those with ongoing medical conditions
- 5% support adults in intensive care
- 1% help babies needing critical care
Platelet transfusions are especially critical for patients with cancer and for those who have lost significant amounts of blood due to accidents, surgery, or organ transplants.
Each platelet donation can make a meaningful difference, helping up to three adults, or as many as 12 children.
However, platelets have a very short shelf life of just seven days, meaning there is a constant and ongoing need for donations.
Mark’s milestone is a fantastic example of the difference one person can make.
Mark’s generosity reflects the incredible people that work at Sefton Council. His willingness to make a personal commitment to helping others demonstrates the very best of our organisation. Through his dedication, he has undoubtedly saved and improve countless lives.
Sefton ARC congratulates Mark on this extraordinary achievement and thanks him for his continued commitment to supporting others.
