Sefton Council's Street Cleansing Team supported Arriva North West colleagues for a community clean-up day, clearing three alleyways of fly-tipped waste.  

Vanloads of rubbish

The joint operation with the bus company removed four vanloads of rubbish, helping to tackle environmental issues and create a cleaner, greener Sefton together.  

Altogether, the teams cleared alleyways on Dryden Street, Gray Street, and Poets Park in Bootle.  

Delivering social value

The clean-up forms part of a growing partnership between Arriva and Sefton Council, with both organisations exploring opportunities to deliver wider social value benefits across the borough. 

Councillor Peter Harvey, Cabinet Member for Cleansing and Street Scene, said:  
“Sefton Council continues to lead the fight against fly-tipping. But it is not a challenge we can tackle alone. Fly-tipping continues to place a significant challenge for so many councils across the country. 

“Therefore, tackling fly-tipping requires a collective effort, which is why we were delighted to welcome Arriva's offer of support through corporate volunteering. By combining our resources and working in partnership, we can make a real difference for residents, creating cleaner alleyways, helping to make Sefton an even better place to live, work and visit.”

“Fly-tipping affects everyone locally, so it was great to team up with Sefton Council and see the difference a few hours of teamwork can make to Dryden Street, Gray Street and Poets Park.  

“This is exactly the kind of partnership we want to build on with Sefton because supporting the borough is not only about running buses, it's also about being a genuinely active part of the community and helping improve the environment for everyone."

Growing partnership

The volunteering day builds on an existing relationship between Arriva and Sefton Council. Arriva has worked closely with Sefton@Work over the past year and is now looking to build on that relationship by supporting the Council through a range of corporate volunteering initiatives.  

Beyond environmental improvement projects, Arriva and Sefton Council are exploring a wider partnership focused on delivering social value across the borough.  

This includes supporting the Sefton Caring Business Charter, promoting fostering opportunities, and exploring how Arriva can become involved in Sefton's Skills Academy programmes to help residents develop valuable skills and access employment opportunities. 

The successful clean-up highlights the value of collaboration between Sefton Council and businesses in Sefton delivering meaningful social value for residents.
