Junction Upgrade Works

Proposed Works

The existing double mini roundabout layout at the junction the B5193 Islington / Coronation Road/ Church Road junction will be replaced with a new four-arm signalised junction. The new signal junction will provide two new signal-controlled pedestrian crossings across Islington and the top of Coronation Road, allowing safer access to shops and businesses in the town centre. Both new signalised crossings will have a staggered central refuge for pedestrians to use.

In addition to the new four arm signal junction works will also be undertaken on the existing traffic signals at the A565 / By-Pass junction. The existing traffic signal equipment will be replaced and upgraded, along with changes to the approaching carriageway lanes and changes to the existing pedestrian refuges.

The current approach to the junction from the By-Pass will be changed to one ahead only lane for motorists travelling towards Coronation Road and one left only lane for motorist travelling towards Liverpool Road. For motorists travelling north along the A565 the ahead only lane will be reduced to a single lane in addition to a left only lane towards Coronation Road. These changes to the lanes will allow for the existing pedestrian refuges at the junction to be increased in size, allowing easier and safer pedestrian movements.

Construction Period

Works are due to start on the 18th September 2023 and are expected to continue until the end of November. To complete the works in a safe and timely manner it will be necessary to have local road closures in place on Coronation Road and Islington during the works, along with temporary traffic signals. All diversions will be signed and where necessary temporary pedestrian crossings points will be installed, however motorists should anticipate an increase in journey times as a result.

In addition to the closures a temporary one-way order will also be put in place for Harrington Road and Vale Road.

The B5193 Islington / Coronation Road/ Church Road / A565 junction will also be resurfaced as part of these works, and it is anticipated that this work will be completed in the evenings towards the end of the scheme.

Please note there will be some disruption to bus services around the town centre. Merseytravel customers can find out further information regarding travel updates/roadworks diversions on the Merseytravel website with the following link

Access to shops and businesses

During Construction works pedestrian access to shops and businesses along Coronation Road and Liverpool Road will be maintained and shops and businesses are expected to remain open as usual. The Coronation Road closures will not affect access into or out of the Tesco car park.

The Council would like to take this opportunity to apologise for any inconvenience these works may cause you and will endeavour to complete these works as soon as practical.
