Changes to Council Tax Discounts and Empty Property Premium from April 1, 2020
After considering the results of public consultation exercises in 2018 and 2019, the Council has agreed to amend the following empty property discounts and empty property premium with effect from April 1, 2020:
- Empty properties undergoing or requiring major or structural repair will no longer receive a discount of 50% for up to 12 months. A full Council Tax charge will be payable.
- Properties that have been empty for more than 5 years will be charged a premium of 200%. A charge of 300% of the Council Tax will be payable.
- Empty properties will no longer receive a discount of 100% for the first month. Instead a discount of 50% will be allowed for one month, after which the full Council Tax charge will be payable.
Please note the new charges will apply from April 1, 2020, irrespective of the period of discount awarded prior to this date.
e.g. If your property is undergoing major repair and a 50% discount has already been awarded to you from 1st December 2019, your property will receive a discount for 4 months. With effect from April 1, 2020 a full Council Tax charge will be payable.
