Universal Credit

Universal Credit was introduced in Sefton on 30 June 2014 and replaces the following in-and-out of work benefits for working-age applicants:

  • Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
  • Housing Benefit
  • Working Tax Credit
  • Child Tax Credit
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • Income Support

Universal Credit is administered and paid by the Department for Work and Pensions.

To claim Universal Credit you must live within Sefton, be fit and available for work and meet other criteria. If you are not eligible to apply for Universal Credit you may still be able to apply for Jobseekers Allowance and other benefits.

The criteria for claiming Universal Credit is extended regularly and you should check the Department for Work and Pensions Universal Credit service

Universal Credit claims are made online at www.gov.uk/universalcredit

If you do not have direct access to the internet you can visit one of the following locations:


  • One Stop Shop, 324 Stanley Road, Bootle, L20 3ET (Open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm)
  • Job Centre Plus (9.00 – 5.00 each weekday, Wednesday at 10.00)


  • Jobcentre Plus (9.00 – 5.00 each weekday, Wednesday at 10.00)


  • One stop shop Cambridge Arcade, Southport (Open Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm)
  • Jobcentre Plus (9.00 – 5.00 each weekday, Wednesday at 10.00)


  • Jobcentre Plus (9.00 – 5.00 each weekday, Wednesday at 10.00)


If for any reason you have difficultly using the online claim form you can contact the Universal Credit helpline on 0345 6000 723.

You will need the following information with you to make your claim online:

  • National Insurance number
  • Details of a bank, building society or Post Office account into which your Universal Credit will be paid
  • Rent agreement (if you have one) and details of your current rent
  • Details of any savings and other capital
  • Details of any non-work income - for example income from an insurance plan
  • Details of any other benefits you already get
  • If you have a partner you will also need their details

It should take between 20 and 40 minutes to complete your claim.

Their opening hours are 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday. The calls are charged at the standard local call charge rate from BT landlines. Call charges from mobiles and other networks may vary. If a call ends suddenly, it is up to you to call back.

If you are claiming Universal Credit and you are in rented accommodation please remember that any housing costs will be paid to you, not to your landlord. You should contact your landlord immediately and make arrangements to pay your rent directly to your landlord.

Additional help may be awarded by the Local Authority where housing costs paid through Universal Credit do not meet your full housing costs. Discretionary Housing Payments are discretionary awards and further information can be found in the related links area of this page.
