Copies of certificates

You can apply online for a copy of a birth, marriage, death or civil partnership certificate using the links below.

Please include an email address so that when your request has been confirmed we will send an email requesting payment via a link to Sefton’s payment site.

If you choose to apply by post you need to send us a letter containing the following information:
• Name of the person at the time of the event (and the name of their partner if applying for a marriage/civil partnership certificate)
• Date of the event
• Place of birth and parents names (for a birth certificate)
• Place of death, age (or date of birth) and home address (for a death certificate)
• Name of the church or venue (or registration district) for a marriage/civil partnership certificate.

Copies of birth, death, marriage and civil partnership certificates cost £10 each.

A short copy of a birth certificate is also available for £10 however this does not include parents’ details and may not always be accepted by employers or other organisations.

All certificates must be paid for at time that you apply.

There is a charge of £1 for first class post within the UK unless a stamped addressed envelope is enclosed with your application. There is a charge of £1.50 to cover overseas postage.

Sefton Registration Service is not liable for any certificates that are delayed or lost in the post.

We issue all certificates within 5 working days of receipt of payment.

If you need your certificate to be issued more quickly you may wish to use our priority service. This will allow for certificates to be issued within 1 hour for personal callers provided that we have received your application by 3pm (4.30pm on Tuesdays only). Unfortunately we are unable to provide a priority service for family history applications.

Our priority service costs £30 (£10 for the certificate and £20 priority fee).

We also offer a same day priority service for online applications. To ensure postage on the same day payment must be received by 3pm (4.30pm on Tuesdays only).
