Eleven new, larger bin units have been introduced to the Crosby coastline to help keep Sefton’s coast clean. 

They are part of an investigation into how larger and strategically positioned bins can reduce littering in the Borough’s coastal and inland spaces.

Welcome bin-troduction

The 11 new bins have been installed in Crosby Coastal Park and in busy beach-adjacent areas including car parks. They are in addition to the many bins already available in the area and will provide even more options for people who have rubbish to throw away while visiting the coast. 

Sefton Council has funded the introduction of the new units, which will feature large 'Euro' bins tucked inside a housing designed to protect the bins from the element. 

With a bright and colourful vinyl covering to be added soon, the aim is for the bins to stand out, signposting places where people can throw away their rubbish responsibly and help to keep the coast clean and green. They are also designed so that Sefton Council staff can access and empty them quickly and easily. 

Introduction of the bins was made possible with the support of Blundellsands councillors Cllr Christine Howard, Cllr David Roscoe and Cllr Diane Roscoe.

Keeping the coast clean

Cllr Joanne Williams, Cabinet Member for Public Health and Wellbeing, said: “Sefton residents are rightly proud of our beautiful coast and green spaces, and the importance of keeping them clear of litter. At Sefton Council, we could not agree with that more. 

“These new units are big and will be brightly coloured thanks to our plans to add an eye-catching outer design, so there really is no excuse for people to be littering in Crosby Coastal Park. 

“Sefton Council staff work hard to empty bins frequently, but we ask people to be patient and, if a bin is full, find another one or take their rubbish home.” 

Cllr Peter Harvey, Cabinet Member for Cleansing and Streetscene, added: “The introduction of these bin units benefits both people living nearby and the thousands who visit Crosby Coastal Park every year.  

“They certainly stand out, so our one simple ask is that people use them and don’t leave rubbish lying around. 

“This is part of our ongoing commitment to make Sefton a cleaner, greener place for residents and tackle behaviours like littering and fly-tipping that are an eyesore and an environmental hazard. 

“We hope to see these bins making a difference by easing the pressure on staff during busy days and visibly reducing littering – or hopefully even stopping it entirely.” 

In a joint statement, Cllrs Howard, Roscoe and Roscoe said: "We are committed to keeping Blundellsands ward cleaner, greener and safer. Crosby Beach is the jewel of our neighbourhood, and seeing it spoiled by litter is heartbreaking for those of us who live and visit here. We are delighted with these new coastal bins to help visitors look after our beautiful coast. 

"We have long campaigned for larger bins at Crosby Beach. We previously secured temporary Euro bins during peak visitor times. We are thrilled to finally see this permanent solution in place and thank officers and Cabinet members for making this happen. 

"As members of a local beach clean group, we see the litter problem firsthand. We look forward to the positive impact these larger units will have on our environment."
