What is the Council doing to become more sustainable
The Council has adopted an explicit environmental statement
“Sefton Council will promote the adoption of environmentally
sustainable activities by Sefton Communities and throughout Council
service delivery.”
A voluntary three level approach to mainstreaming
sustainability throughout the council has been developed and is now
well established amongst most departments. The three levels of
actions departments are asked to commit to are as follows;
Level 1
- Appoint a senior Champion to make progress and report on
sustainability
- Sustainability training for Managerial staff (using “Planit
Sefton” an award winning training tool)
- Adoption of Sustainable housekeeping e.g. office recycling,
energy efficiency measures
Level 2
- Sustainability Appraisal of policies / plans
- Extend sustainability training to all staff
- Extend the sustainable housekeeping guide activities e.g.
investment decisions
- Identify where departments can assist each other e.g. Transport
decisions on fuel/vehicles affect all who use fleet vehicles.
Level 3
- Development of sustainable procurement policy and activities
(currently in development)
- Implement environmental management system EMAS (the
Environmental Protection Department are currently piloting)
This framework helps departments to build upon each action to
become sustainable at a pace they are comfortable with.
