Southport Cycling Town

Southport is a Cycling Town and we are now working to
encourage more visitors and residents to enjoy cycling around the
town.
In order to become a Cycling Town, Southport along with more
than 70 other towns and cities staked a claim for a share of £47
million in government funding. A Sefton delegation presented an
overwhelming case to the Cycling England panel, which included a
special DVD outlining the ambitious plans for
Southport.
The Cycle Town Project has 3 key themes:-
- To encourage cycling for Tourism and Leisure - through the development of a
high quality cycle network around the seafront area, access to the
Sefton coast and the development of links to the town centre.
- Regeneration – there are 2 main areas of
regeneration within the town, the Marine Park area on the seafront
and the area to the east of the town around Kew. It is proposed to
serve these areas with a number of high quality cycle routes. A
programme of targeted marketing and promotion will back up the
development of these routes.
- Schools – getting the cycling habit at
a young age is vital and the aim is to have 15% of secondary school
children cycling to school by 2011. There will be a particular
emphasis to encourage teenage girls to cycle as they are less
likely to participate in physical activity.
