Adult and community learning in libraries
Informal - for you
Many libraries offer you the chance to learn new skills in an
informal, relaxed setting.
Friendly tutors from Sefton's Adult and Community Learning
Service (ACL) may lead short 'taster' courses on a
variety of topics - drawing and painting, for example. 'First
step' opportunities, such as the basics of internet and
e-mailing, are always popular. The ACL may also run
library-based English courses for speakers of other languages
(ESOL).
In some libraries, full-length leisure courses, or special
sessions for families, are occasionally available.
For further details, view the Learning Service's prospectus or
contact your local library.
If you're looking for details of other learning opportunities
and venues in the area just drop into any
Sefton library. Whether you're interested in informal
study, or a course leading to a specific qualification, our
staff will be able to tell you what's on offer.
Our main reference libraries stock a huge range
of educational handbooks, university prospectuses and other guides
to lead you through the learning maze. Drop in, browse round -
and talk to our Information Services staff if you need any
help.
If you're interested in learning online, why not take a look at
what Learndirect has to offer? Learndirect’s online courses
cover many subjects including IT, business
and languages. There is a Learndirect centre in the
Connect Learning Centre at Crosby Library, facilitated by
Connect Internet Solutions (CIS). The CIS staff also offer other
learning opportunities in the centre.
Don't forget, if you like to learn at your own pace, libraries
have more than just books to help you on your way. Our language
courses on tape or CD, for example, are always popular. Whether
it's a few basic phrases for that holiday in Greece, or
a beginner's course in Japanese, you can borrow the items
free.
If you are learning about your ancestors by 'growing'
your own family tree, you can access the massive Ancestry Library Edition databanks
free. Just visit any branch library and
use our People's Network computer facilities.
So whether you're learning for a purpose or learning for
pleasure, make the local library your first
stop for information.
