Traffic scheme consultations
The Council will seek the views of residents and road users
during the design of highway or traffic management schemes on the
public highway.
As part of our policy, we will consult residents on the majority
of traffic management schemes, which we carry out.
Clearly, certain works, such as simple carriageway markings and
traffic signs, do not adversely affect residents and these are not
consulted on. Larger schemes, such as kerb build-outs, pedestrian
refuges and traffic calming will be consulted on. All residents
fronting the features (or in the case of traffic calming, the whole
road) will be sent a letter and plan of the proposal, with a
questionnaire to be returned in a pre-paid envelope. Plans and
questionnaires can also be downloaded on-line if you go to the
relevant link below. Relevant contact details will be given on the
consultation documents.
The results of the consultation will be reported to the relevant
Area Committee before any decision to proceed with the scheme has
been taken. Residents can also attend the Area Committee to express
their views.
Certain measures, such as yellow lines, 'No Entry' signs or road
humps require a formal legal notice to be published in the local
paper. A three week period is allowed for objections to be
received. Formal objections are considered by the Area Committee,
and schemes may need to be re-designed with further Notices being
published, before a legally enforceable Traffic Regulation Order
can be made and the scheme introduced. In addition to the legal
notice in the paper, we will also post a notice on lamp columns in
the road giving details of the proposed Traffic Regulation Order
and the address to send objections to.
