Cycling in Sefton

Cycling is an ideal form of
transport for many short journeys and is great fun as a
leisure activity. It is healthy, convenient, cheap, environmentally
friendly and sustainable.
Cycling has a major role to
play in achieving the objectives of the Merseyside Local Transport
Plan. To demonstrate this, the vision for cycling on Merseyside is
to increase cycle use in order to reduce the use of private cars
and improve the quality of life for all. This is to
be achieved by developing a transport infrastructure that
is safe, convenient, efficient and attractive for cyclists.

Sefton Council is
dedicated to developing a safe and convenient
cycle network, giving priority to cyclists in
accordance with the appropriate transport hierarchy,
providing cycling facilities such as safe cycle
parking, integration with public transport and
the promotion of cycling as a healthy
alternative.
To achieve this, Sefton Council
has been working closely with its partners Merseyside Travelwise,
Sefton Primary Care Trust, Sustrans, Cycling England, CTC and
British Cycling.
In 2008, Southport and Ainsdale
were announced as one of England's cycling towns, where the
Government will be making a significant investment, together with
the local authority and its partners, to increase the level of
cycling throughout the town.
