Student loans and fees
Making the decision to study a full-time higher education course
is a big step, and the offer of financial help can be crucial. We
work in partnership with the Government's Department for Education
and Skills and the Student Loans Company to provide that help. We
will try to ensure that you have all the facts you need.
How the Application Process works
The new system of student support will be dealt with by a
partnership of your 'home' Local Education Authority (LEA), the
Student Loans Company, UCAS and the Higher Education Institution
where you will be studying. The support you will be applying for is
a Higher Education Grant, Assistance towards tuition fees and a
student loan (if required).
Application Process:
- 2008/2009 Paper Applications available NOW
- 2008/2009 On-line Applications available NOW
If you currently attend one of Sefton's 6th Form
Schools or Colleges application forms have been distributed direct
to them at the beginning of March.
- Contact Sefton LEA for a paper application pack (form PN1)
Alternatively, you can apply online at student
finance direct.
- Complete your application form (PN1) either on paper or online
and return it with all the necessary documents (i.e. Birth
Certificate, P60's etc) to: Sefton LEA, Bootle Town Hall, Oriel
Road, Bootle, L20 7AE.
- Sefton will then be able to assess your entitlement for
support. They will also inform you of how much (if anything) you or
your family will have to contribute towards your tuition fees, and
the maximum amount of help with living costs you can get.
- If you have completed the Loan Request Form this will identify
how much loan you wish to take out. Sefton will notify the Student
Loans Company and they will subsequently contact you to inform you
when and where your loan will be paid. Payments are normally made
at the start of the term.
IMPORTANT: We cannot process your application without
seeing your original passport or birth certificate (see
the Passport/Birth Certificate
section below).
As it is a combined application for maintenance grants,
fee loans and maintenance loans, all students are encouraged
to make an application. If you do not make an application, your
University may charge you higher tuition fees.
For further information on eligibility criteria please refer to
the Student Support section of
the DfES website.
