Crossing patrols
The history
School Crossing Patrols were established by the School Crossing
Act of 1953 and instituted on 1 July 1954. An amendment of the Act
was made in 2001 enabling Patrols to cross adults as well as
children.
Present
Sefton Council took over responsibility for the service from
Merseyside Police in 1994. Since that time we have prided ourselves
on providing a first class service throughout the Borough. We
currently have patrols operating on 91 different sites.
Criteria for Patrol sites
Requests for new sites need to meet the adopted criteria as set
out in the RoSPA national guidelines. This takes into account the
number of pedestrians plus the number of vehicles. All sites are
regularly risk assessed and surveyed for optimum use.
The people
Our Patrols are valued members of the community. They have an
extremely important role to play. Both men and women of all ages
are dedicated to providing a safe passage for children to and from
school.
