Work based learning
If you leave school or college with fewer than 5 GCSEs A-C (or
equivalent) the law now says you are entitled to reasonable time
off for study or training.
Many young people in employment will carry on learning in some
way, maybe by going to college or a training centre for one day a
week.
Work based learning will help you gain skills and knowledge to
do your job better, and should be directly related to the work you
do.
Work based learning will give you more qualifications and for
many training courses, being willing to learn is more important
than having certain GCSE grades. So look out for jobs with training
- you can earn while you learn, and give yourself the chance of a
better job.
Work-Based Learning Courses
Work based learning is about gaining qualifications through
Apprenticeships/Advanced Apprenticeships or through Entry to
Employment (E2E) - for those young people not yet ready to
start an apprenticeship or who are vocationally undecided.
A work based course offers:
- Relevant work experience with a local company.
- Relevant NVQ training to either level 2 or level 3.
You may also do work on key skills, to improve your communication,
number and IT skills.
- Extra support, for instance with Maths and English, to help you
achieve your qualification.
- A wage or Education Maintenance Allowance
(EMA) if unemployed.
- A good chance of a job or employed Apprenticeship during your
course.
How to apply for Work-based learning courses:
- Talk to your Connexions Personal Adviser in school and ask for
information leaflets on the different programmes.
- Check any particular entry requirements.
- Fill in a training application form (available form the
Connexions Centre), and return this to your Connexions Personal
Adviser.
- Make sure you apply in good time. Programmes like
childcare and motor vehicle are very popular so places fill up
early.
- If you do not want full time study but aren't ready to start a
job or training straight away, ask your connexions personal Adviser
about an E2E course.
- Apply online using i-ChooseSefton.org.uk.
