Complementary education

The Complementary Education
Service works in partnership with schools and other agencies in
raising the achievement, and to support the continuing education of
Vulnerable Children.
We aim to:
- Provide advice and guidance to schools to ensure they meet the
needs of and fulfil their statutory obligations towards vulnerable
pupils.
- Support schools in ensuring that they are meeting their
responsibilities to provide a minimum statutory entitlement for
pupils who cannot attend due to illness or during a maternity
leave.
- Enhance the learning opportunities and achievement of pupils by
the creative use of ICT and Distance Learning strategies.
- Liaise with outside agencies, schools and families to develop
strategies to raise levels of achievement for vulnerable groups, in
order to enable them to access education and achieve their
full potential.
- Support attendance, integration or re-integration of vulnerable
children into school, further education, work or
training.
- Follow the guidelines set out in the Digits Pathway
to support vulnerable pupils. Further information on this
process is available on the Digits Pathway section of the website.
- Provide support and advice to schools in raising the
achievement of Minority Ethnic, Traveller, Asylum Seeker
and EAL (English as an Alternative Language) pupils.
- Provide an Authority-wide advice service and INSET for schools
in areas such as Traveller support, Distance
Learning and EAL
provision.
