Uniformed groups
Scouting in Sefton
The Scout Association provides adventurous activities and
personal development opportunities for 400,000 young people aged
6-25. Scouting is for girls as well as boys and is the country's
largest mixed organisation for young people.
If you are aged between 6-25 there will be a group for you to
join locally. If not why don’t you volunteer some of your time to
help run Scouting. You decide how much time you give and how often.
There are five different age ranges of the association which
includes:
Beaver Scouts
Beaver Scouts are the youngest section in The Scout Association
and are aged 6-8 years old. This section focuses on having fun and
making friends.
Cub Scouts
Cub Scouts are Boys and Girls aged 8 to 10. They meet in a Cub
Pack and have lots of fun. At Cubs you can try lots of fun
activities like Camping, going on trips and making things.
Scouts
The Scout Section is for young people, aged between 10½ and 14
years. This section is more adventurous including the camping but
also activities like canoeing, climbing, zorbing and much much
more.
Explorer Scouts
The Explorer section is for young people, aged 14 to 18 years.
This section tends to meet across bigger areas, learn specific
skills like archery and achieve some of the highest awards in the
UK like the Duke of Edinburgh awards.
Scout Network
The Network Section is for young Adults aged 18 to 25. This
section is very flexible, as young adults maybe have just started
work, moved to a university. This section offers a drop in
programme, with a focus on national and international opportunities
and events.
You can find further information on either the Merseyside Scouts website or
the UK Scouts Association website, or
contact the Merseyside Scouts directly.
Sefton Sea Cadet Unit
Based in Field Lane, Litherland, TS STARLING is a valuable local
youth resource, welcoming young people between the ages of 10 and
18 years. Sefton Sea Cadets provide nautical training opportunities
within the Unit, as well as sending the young people of South
Sefton to sea in motor vessels and tall ships. They also provide
Btec, NVQ and practical qualifications alongside leadership,
teamwork and discipline.
Cadets can take part in such activities as: shooting, swimming,
climbing and abseiling, sailing, canoeing and kayaking, power
boating, seamanship, engineering and preparation for entry to the
uniformed services (although the Sea Cadets is NOT a pre-service
organisation).
The Sea Cadet Corps is jointly
supported by the Royal Navy and its parent charity, The Marine
Society & Sea Cadets. Each of the 386 units throughout the UK
is an independent charity, raising funds and support in the local
community. Sea Cadets offers a wide range of largely free
activities for boys and girls aged 10-18.
The Corps aims to encourage good citizenship and provide
worthwhile qualifications, experience and adventure for young
people. It gives them the opportunity to learn life skills whilst
having fun and making friends. The dedicated volunteers who staff
the units are selected with care and are fully qualified to work
with young people.
