Corporate parenting board

The Sefton Corporate Parenting Board was successfully launched on 6th October, 2009.

Corporate Parenting is the term used to describe the responsibility that all Local Authorities, and their partner agencies, have to children and young people who are in their care.

This responsibility will fulfil some, or all, of the traditional parenting role and can happen on many levels from decisions about their day to day care through to decisions about where a child will live and which school they will attend.

“Strong corporate parenting arrangements are central to improving services for children and young people in care.”  (DCSF, 2008).

It is the role of the Corporate Parenting Board to set the priorities for children in care and to monitor and scrutinise service delivery.

Membership includes Councillors, senior officers from Sefton's services including leisure, children’s and adult's services, as well as foster carers; children and young people in care and care leavers and partner organisations in housing, education, NHS Sefton, Merseyside Police and Connexions.

The Sefton Corporate Parenting Strategy and the Sefton Pledge for Children in Care were both launched at the meeting.

The Sefton Pledge for Children in Care was developed by children and young people in care in Sefton and outlines what they want from the services that provide support and care for them.
